I want an LMTV just to do those particular things.

I was shocked to learn it didn’t have locking diffs. Bah!

I really want one too. They aren’t terribly expensive but I hear they can be a chore to maintain. Also, they get like 6 mpgs and only go about 56mph.

Truth, as with most military things- 55-65 is just enough speed for highway travel. I’m sure the tires arent exactly happy at high speeds either. Also, you’d be surprised at how low hours some of the equipment is too!

Some days I spend hours looking at gov auction sites for “reasons”.

Yeah, I spend more time on there than I should.

The axles under those things were used in a few other vehicles, and there’s a set of gears you can swap that will allow you to hit almost 70, which is probably faster than I’d want to go in it anyways. Also, the later A1 models use an electronically injected engine. Any authorized CAT service tech can plug in his scan tool and in about 20 minutes reflash the ECU and give you a nice power boost. Stock power is in the 275-300HP range, the retune gets it up to 375HP I think.

Cool. No damn DEF/DPF either. Also, I’d uh... need the armored version (if only):

I didn’t know Fred was in Utah recently. I love that no one even gives him 2 looks for driving it...but I guess they wouldn’t so close to base.

Scale it down to 2/3 size and it would probably be perfect for overlanding. As is its not bad though.
